Basic Breakdown
Not many people get to grips with this, they simply disregard what a calorie actually is but they somehow know they need less of them to lose weight.
A calorie is a unit of measurement given to underpin the amount of energy it takes to heat 1Lb of body up by 1 degrees celcius. So its true that using up calories to keep your body ticking, alive and warm takes up the biggest chunk of your energy. This links onto energy systems and adaptation to different climates of course.
The general rule of thumb people mistake is that a calorie is a calorie... This couldn't be much more wrong. A lot of people think eating 3000 calories of cake will be the same as eating 3000 calories of brown rice. NO!
It may seem obvious to some of you but this is a point I've had from clients in the past where they've literally said to me "I haven't ate all day just so i can go home and eat my chocolate cake".
Calories are worked out via the nutritional information on each food, they are based on a sum of Fat, Carbohydrates & Proteins, this obviously can be misleading. If an item has 14g fat and adds up to the same as an item that has 2g of fat then surely you guys must know which is best.
Here is a brilliant link to a macro split calculator and a way to work out your daily calorie intake!
