How to Stay Focused & Motivated?
We don't all have to be like 'Mr Motivator' (remember him? What happened to him by the way?) around the gym to keep ourselves perked up and excited for the next set! I'm going to give a complete simple guide to keeping motivated, now I'm throwing these down on the page so if you can think of anything that helps you that I haven't stated then please feel free to let me know :)
Toms Top Tips To Stay Motivated (Cheesy Sub-Heading)
1) Get your i-pod or phone stocked up with some wicked music! None of this Celine Dion or Winston Garfield (made him up but he sounds crap). Take the time to listen to what you actually think will get you pumped up, my phone contains 38 tracks, amounting to 1 hour 36 minutes long, but every single track on there has the ability to mess with my brain and get me fired up to enjoy a workout. What I look for in music? Firstly that it has a good beat, not slow! Secondly that it makes me feel slightly euphoric as this heightens attention to the workout without a doubt, thirdly I make sure the words in the song are relevant to how I'm feeling.
2) Pre plan your workout! Don't just walk into the gym like "errrrm i'll do this" because you'll d 3 reps and go home, you need to plan carefully each workout, go to my workouts page if you get a little stuck guys. Or alternatively ask me and I can certainly help! So I plan my workouts a week before they happen, that way I can alter them as and when I need to in order to maximise effectiveness.
3) If you have a training buddy make them work! The last thing you need is a lazy gym pal, so if they slack just whip them into shape and get all serious about it, they'll soon be working hard and thank you for it in the end. Choose your gym buddies wisely.
4) Look at yourself! Now looking at yourself in the gym can NEVER be vein, everybody does it because it helps. If you can try doing your sets in the mirror, you'll either be totally happy with what you see or just be annoyed which either way makes you work harder! FACT!
5) Remember why you're there! You ain't there because the water dispenser has a cool refreshing taste, you're there to smash some tin about and get bigger, better or stronger. Stick to the goals and bloody achieve them! If you're late getting to the gym one day make sure you make up that time at the end.
6) Finish your workouts! Do every single last rep that is down on your workout plan, the moment you skip one rep that's when your mind thinks "ha! I can get away with this all the time". Its not a nice way to workout so get used to hitting each rep hard.
7) Switch up your style! Don't ever let yourself get bored of the workout, if you seem bored finish off, go home and re-plan your whole workout until it seems interesting again. I got bored of 3 sets 10 reps. So now I'm onto GVT and its helped so much with motivation is incredible. Do the same guys.
8) Show off! If nobody is giving you a compliment or making you feel good about yourself, put it out there to let people notice! One compliment a day is enough to keep you going, once you receive that compliment keep repeating it in your head until you see where the person was actually coming from.
9) Get away from the models! Fitness models are brilliant, they've all worked totally hard to get where they are, however take your eyes off them for a while, look at yourself and give yourself some credit for once. You don't HAVE to be like them, just be better than you already are. Personally I don't look at models in admiration I simply have respect for them, yes I'd like to be where they are but that will come in time. Dedication guys.
10) Learn new things every day! Everytime you enter the gym it should be a way to learn, you should be observing others and seeing what else you can do to benefit your workouts. I've self learnt for years and I'm really happy with the amount of stuff I now know simply from other people. Experience will come in time.
